Biography & CV

Thrilling audiences at the top levels of the Canadian music  scene, award-winning Canadian conductor Adam Johnson has been praised as “an exciting talent” and for his “charismatic, commanding presence” on the podium. A highly-sought leader, he completed his training in his role as Assistant Conductor of the Montréal Symphony Orchestra from 2016-2018, and was appointed Resident Conductor for the 2018-2019 season. He collaborated closely with Music Director Kent Nagano on recordings for Decca and Analekta, and contributed to performances in Carnegie Hall, the Salzburg Festival, and a major European tour. He has conducted more than 65 concerts with the OSM and is frequently reengaged as a guest conductor.

Prior to his tenure in Montréal, Johnson served for three seasons with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, initially as Resident Conductor (2013-2015), and subsequently as Associate Conductor (2015-2016).  He has also guest-conducted the Edmonton, Québec, Trois-Rivières, Saskatoon, Regina, Guelph and Thunder Bay symphony orchestras, as well as Symphony Nova Scotia, l’Orchestre du Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, and l’Orchestre symphonique de l’Estuaire. Internationally he has conducted the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Staatsorhester Rheinische Philharmonie and members of the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg.

Soloists include Canadian soprano Shantelle Marie Przybylo, Floristan by Peruvian tenor Dangelo Diaz, Mexican baritone Josué Ceron, Canadian soprano Chelsea Rus, and Polish Bass Radoslaw Ungur.

(All events cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic) On April 5th Adam Johnson makes his debut with the Regina Symphony Orchestra, and has already been re-invited for the 2020-2021 season.

April 10 sees his 3rd return to the OSM this season, in a program featuring IAM.

Continuing his support of young musicians, from April 10-12 Adam Johnson works with a massive combined youth orchestra, culminating in performances in Montreal's beautiful Maison Symphonique for the festival of the Association des Orchestres de Jeunes du Québec.

April 14 sees Adam Johnson in Halifax to work with the choir of Symphony Nova Scotia, in preparation for performances of Beethoven's opera Fidelio in May.

The 3rd week of April will be spent with the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec in a Broadway program featuring Sarah Slean. This marks Adam Johnson's 2nd appearance with the OSQ.

The last week of April will be spent in Halifax rehearsing with Symphony Nova Scotia and soloists for Beethoven's Fidelio.

The OSM and Adam Johnson collaborate on their second program of the season with Plamondon Symphonique, with 4 sold-out performances from April 11-14.

He then returns to Alberta and his passion for pedagogy while adjudicating the Alberta International Band Festival. He will also lead several workshops with high school ensembles, inspiring the next generation of musicians. He will conclude the festival conducting the Honour Band in Bernstein's Candide.

February closes with a return to the recording studio for another Asia-based project.

Returning to the OSM for his 1st of 3 guest conducting appearances with the orchestra in the 2019-2020 season, Adam Johnson conducts 138 musicians on stage in the Maison Symphonique for the hommage to Renée Claude, raising more than $100 000 for Alzheimer's research.

Adam Johnson's alma mater, the Conservatoire de Musique de Montreal, invites him to rehearse Bernstein's Candide Overture and Symphonic Dances, as well as Gershwin's American in Paris and Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto.

He then leads a public workshop on Handel's Messiah, featuring soloists from the Atelier Lyrique of the Opéra de Montréal.

Founding the Horatio Alger Orchestra, Adam Johnson leads their inaugural performance on Oct. 3 in music by Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Grieg, and a collaboration with The Tenors.

On Oct. 18th Adam Johnson is a guest speaker at the Université de Montréal.

He also appears in Chaakapesh, a film by Roger Frappier, which documented the OSM's tour to northern Québec, and premieres on Oct. 19th.

Adam Johnson makes his debut with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra, conducting Sibelius' Finlandia with choir and orchestra, Walton's Viola Concerto, and Dvorak's Symphony no. 9.
